Stepping into consulting has been an eye opening experience. The learning curve has been steep, and it’s pushed me outside of my comfort zone. As a friend, who has many more years in a consulting career than I do, said: “I’m a company girl.” She meant that her brain is most comfortable in the structure of a full-time job, with a set schedule and a regular paycheck. If that’s you (like me), then consulting—or freelance work, contract work, whatever you want to call it—will always feel at least a little uncomfortable.
There are upsides, one being that I can carve out time for meaningful projects. In a newsroom, we’d call these passion projects—the work that I would encourage managers to ensure that staffers had time to pursue. It fills your cup and often provides an opportunity to learn something new.
I’m taking on a big project about what I’m calling health experiences: chronic illnesses, regular pain, temporary disabilities like using crutches, and meaningful diagnoses like cancer or depression. My project will explore how health experiences shape the patient and their caregivers’ lives, perspectives, and identities.
The first step is a survey. I’m aiming to gather opinions from 1,000 people to guide the project. It’s an ambitious goal, and I need your help to spread the word. If you have experience as a patient or caregiver, I’d love for you to fill out the survey and share it with your friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues. It takes less than 10 minutes to complete, and you can submit it anonymously.
You can also help widen the reach of the survey by liking, commenting, or resharing my posts on LinkedIn, Bluesky, X, and Facebook.
Thanks for your help, and I can’t wait to share more about this project soon.
